What is PlantSciLaw?

PlantSciLaw is a Jean Monnet Module aimed at professionals and/or graduates in Agro-sciences, which from 2023 the UPV/EHU offers as its own Degree (University Extension Course), of 6 ECTS credits (extendable to 8).

Second edition, February to April 2025. Registration is open

Languages of instruction 2025: Spanish, and in the case of foreign speakers, English.

Course objectives

Providing graduates or postgraduates in Agri-Sciences and Agrobiology related degrees with a solid background on those aspects of EU functioning and legislation that affect their professional field.

Special attention is given to the role of Agri-Sciences in the European Green Pact, the Farm to Fork Strategy and the Biodiversity Strategy, as well as Just Transition, the SDGs and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

As a student

Obtaining 6 ECTS credits from the UPV/EHU after taking a final test or 8 ECTS credits, taking a test + a short research project as a Final Degree Project.

Formalisation of registration

The formalisation of registration requires the sending of:

  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of university education in Agro-sciences (final year students are admitted).
  • And, in the case of registration as a student, payment of the registration fee to the UPV/EHU. Guest registration is fee of charge.

I.- European Integration and Agri-Sciences. History of the EU, institutional functioning and strategic policies, with special focus on the European Green Deal. Week 1: Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 February

II.- Sustainability in agriculture and recovery of varieties. Sustainable agriculture and organic farming in the EU. Conservation and recovery of traditional varieties. Week 3: Tuesday 11 March

III.- Plant genetic resources: conservation, access and use. Protection of Plant Propagating Material (PRM), Access to Plant Genetic Resources, Equitable Sharing, Biodiversity Conservation and Biosafety in the transboundary movement of plant material (Phytosanitary Passport). Week 4: Tuesday 18 March

IV.- Recursos fitogenéticos: conservación, acceso y utilización. Protección del material de reproducción vegetal (PRM), Acceso a los Recursos Fitogenéticos, Reparto Equitativo, Conservación de la Biodiversidad y la Bioseguridad en el movimiento transfronterizo de material vegetal (Pasaporte Fitosanitario).  Week 5: Tuesday 25 March

V.- Intellectual property and plant material. European protection of intellectual property (IP) associated with agro-sciences: patents and plant breeders’ rights. Week 7: Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th April
