TED 2021 – 129975B-C21. MICINN 2022-2025.

Biosurveillance through AI in the Post-Covid Era – Fundamental rights in the face of biometric technologies (PIs. Leire Escajedo San-Epifanio and Francisco Balaguer Callejón). Participants: UPV/EHU, University of Granada, University Institute of Police Science Research (University of Alcalá) and the Ertzaintza Police Science Unit.

The overall objective of the coordinated AIBioSurveillance project is to generate, transfer and disseminate knowledge that contributes lege lata and lege ferenda to the protection of fundamental rights in the face of the irruption of AI systems for the biometric recognition of persons. Of particular concern is remote and real-time (or synchronous) biometric facial recognition.

Under the leadership of Leire Escajedo (whose PhD in the Dept. of Biotechnology at the University of Alicante dealt with biometric identification), a consortium (two sub-projects) of experts from the academic disciplines SSH and STEM has been formed to address:

(1) on the one hand, a detailed inter- and multidisciplinary study of the possibilities of invasiveness and accuracy, robustness and cybersecurity of AI biometric recognition systems, according to the current state of Science and Technology, especially from Forensic Anthropology and Telematics Engineering;

and (2) on the other hand, a detailed study on the potential impacts of these systems on the fundamental rights of individuals and alternative ways to avoid or minimise them.
